NSCN-IM has threatened to end the ceasefire agreement with the government and return to its «armed struggle» if its demands for a separate «national flag and constitution» are not met.
In a statement released on Friday, the group's general secretary and chief political negotiator, Thuingaleng Muivah, said, «In order to conclude and realize an honorable political agreement, we rule out peaceful means against the ignominious betrayal of the letter and spirit of the Framework Agreement of August 3, 2015, by the Government of India. However, in the first place, we propose third-party intervention to resolve this betrayal of the Framework Agreement. If such a political initiative is rejected by the GoI, NSCN shall resume violent armed resistance against India to defend Nagalim's unique history and its sovereign existence.»
NSCN-IM entered into a ceasefire pact in 1997 before engaging in prolonged peace talks with government interlocutors. On August 3, 2015, NSCN-IM signed a Framework Agreement with the government in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek a permanent solution.
