home minister Amit Shah defended the proposed law to control services in Delhi, in a highly charged political speech which lambasted the Aam Aadmi Party over corruption charges and alleged misgovernance of its government in Delhi. The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill was later passed by a voice vote. The discussion involved sharp political exchanges between the treasury and Opposition benches.
The discussion saw Shah quoting Nehru, Patel, Ambedkar and Rajendra Prasad. “This ordinance refers to the order of the Supreme Court which says Parliament has the right to make laws on any issue related to the National Capital Territory of Delhi. There are provisions in the Constitution that allow the Centre to make laws for Delhi,” Shah said.
He accused the Opposition of political opportunism. “I have a small question to the entire Opposition: You had stalled Parliament demanding a statement of the prime minister and said only if that happens you will attend the House. But what happened today? You say you are worried about democracy.
If that is the case, then every bill is important. If you are worried about the country, a bill affecting farmers came up, you did not participate. You are not worried about democracy, the country or people.
You are worried about the alliance. You were saying India is watching. Yes, India is watching and watching your dual character also.” Alluding to the newly formed INDIA, Shah said, “You think of expanding your alliance.
