Khandu was elected the BJP Legislature Party leader at a meeting on Wednesday. BJP's central observers Ravi Sankar Prasad and Tarun Chugh attended the meeting.
Khandu met Governor Lieutenant General (Retired) KT Parnaik and staked a claim to form the government. The swearing in ceremony of the new government is likely to take place on Thursday.
The ruling BJP in Arunachal Pradesh romped back to power for the third consecutive term. BJP has won 46 seats in the 60-member assembly.
Congress which contested 19 seats managed to win one seat. National People's Party (NPP) won five seats and People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) won two seats. NPP is an ally of BJP however it fought the polls on its own.
NCP won two seats and Independents won three seats. BJP had earlier won 10 seats uncontested. Khandu and Deputy CM Chowna Mein are among the BJP candidates who won unopposed.
The BJP won 41 seats in the 2019 Assembly polls, and subsequently, seven MLAs of other parties, including the Janata Dal-United, joined the BJP.
