Hermes in episode 3 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which was a surprising thing for the fans as the character was missing from the novel – The Lightning Thief.
In the show on Disney+, both the characters of Hephaestus and Hermes stand out since none of them are present in the novel for the show’s first season.
The ending of episode 3 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians shows a new scene that is not there in the books or is an expanded version of a scene. After the fight with Medusa, ending with Percy tearing off the head of the snake-haired woman, the young demi-god takes her head to Mount Olympus. This expresses the fact that he is upset with the gods.
In the movies, this scene was not there and hence was not expected by the fans. After the sealing of the cardboard, Percy writes «With best wishes, Percy Jackson” the same as in the book. Audiences get to watch the severed head getting delivered by Hermes to the 600th floor of the Empire State Building, where Mount Olympus is situated. With the box in hand, Hermes presses the secret button of the elevator, riding up to the 600th floor, with a captivating elevator song (Arthur’s theme by Christopher Cross) as in the book and dressed in the uniform of a mailman.
After Hermes reaches the top, he walks into Olympus with a leer and says: “You guys are gonna want to see this” with a reference to the chopped-off head. This is not the only appearance of Hermes as he is a part of the Sequence of Lotus Casino as well. This has been revealed by the promotional pictures and trailers.
