Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed concerns over the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in generating ‘deepfakes’ and urged the need for responsible use of technology during the era of AI.
PM Modi said that he has directed the ChatGPT team to actively identify deepfake content and issue warnings when such videos circulate online.

Speaking to journalists at the BJP’s Diwali Milan programme in new Delhi, he stressed the importance of raising awareness about the potential risks associated with deepfakes and urged the media to play a proactive role in educating the public on this matter.
The Prime Minister’s comments come in the wake of a controversy surrounding a manipulated video featuring actress Rashmika Mandanna’s face. The video in question has ignited the debate on regulating technology to address the growing concerns associated with deepfake content.

The incident prompted several people in the film industry, including actor Amitabh Bachchan, to call for legal action against such deceptive practices.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Union Minister for Electronics & Technology, also reflected on the issue via the social media platform X, calling deepfakes a “more dangerous and damaging form of misinformation.” He highlighted the importance of social media platforms adhering to legal obligations and IT rules related to digital deception.
