water crisis? With polls, politics, and heatwaves coming up in the national capital the common man's life will be at stake.
While the Delhi Jal Board claimed that there was no deficit in water provision, it is also true that water production has remained unchanged over the past year.
As per ToI report, in Feb 2023, DJB's internal report to chief minister «Arvind Kejriwal» stated that the optimal water production level was 990 million gallons per day (MGD). On April 3 this year, the water utility said in a written statement that water production in the capital stood at 990.2 MGD on average between the end of March and start of April. Many within DJB privately accepted that this was going to be the toughest summer that the water utility has faced.
«We are ready to meet the season's requirements. The various lacks — on planning, technical scrutiny of earlier proposals, revenue reforms, robust accounting systems, etc. -are being corrected now,» responded a DJB official to TOI's queries on the matter. «It's also election time and allegations are bound to fly thick and fast and we can understand it.»
Last year, Delhi CM approved a short-term plan to increase water production by 131 MGD. He also gave the green light to a longer action plan aiming to boost water production by 380 MGD. However, according to the latest report provided by DJB, water production is static. This means that the projects discussed weren't taken forward. But there still is talk of a water crisis in the city.
