DigiLocker. So could be Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation statements and Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act job cards, as the government’s online document repository is up for a major expansion. “Documents of income tax returns, EPFO statements, and MGNREGA job cards will soon be available on DigiLocker… Making passports and voter IDs available is also a work in progress,” a government official told ET.
“This will make it easy to provide proof of employment, apply for a loan, and get provident fund,” the official added. The digital repository already has 2,311 issuers on board and is working on having all government departments make documents available on the DigiLocker account of each citizen, people aware of the development said. “There is already a notification from the Department of Administrative Reforms that says all government departments should be an issuer of documents on DigiLocker.
We are working on that,” said the official quoted above. Organisations issuing documents and certificates to citizens can do so digitally through DigiLocker by becoming a registered issuer. Some government departments/agencies, educational institutions, and financial institutions are already using this facility.
DigiLocker has over 174 million registered users, 5.62 billion issued documents, and 166 requesters so far. Issued documents available via DigiLocker are fetched in real-time directly from the issuing agency. It enables government agencies to verify data directly from issuers after obtaining user consent.
