The CBI prosecutor, on the other hand, argued that this was a «rarest of rare» case to stress the gravity of the crime, especially as the doctor was working at a government hospital. He called for the maximum punishment to be imposed to restore public trust in the justice system.
The accused, Sanjay Roy, maintained his innocence and alleged that he was tortured while being transferred from police custody to the Centra Bureau of Investigation.

The sessions court had convicted the then civic police volunteer on January 18, 2025, in the case. Judge Anirban Das, relying on forensic evidence presented by the Central Bureau of Investigation, found Roy guilty under Sections 63, 64, and 103 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, with a potential death sentence or life imprisonment as the punishment. Roy’s DNA was found on the victim’s body, solidifying the case against him.
