Severance have done a flip to what was implied in the premiere of Season 2. The episode revealed that Lumon did not fire Cobel but was offered a promotion by her. After the three year break, the premiere indicated that Cobel lost her job as Lumon fired her after the uprising and the Macrodata Refinement’s contingency plan. But, the reality was Lumon did not intend to lose Cobel while Milchick had replaced her as floor manager.

After trying hard, Helly doesn’t deliver her speech about severed employees’ subjugation in season 1’s ending. Cobel was called for a meeting with Helena who offered her a promotion as the head of the new ‘Severance Advisory Counsel’ instead of terminating her. Cobel did not accept the position and packed her bag, leaving it unclear as to whether she still wants to keep her job or not.
Cobel acknowledges that this job offer is to keep her mouth shut. Through season 1, Cobel was a part of Lumon’s operations and mission. With her refusing the job offer, there can be a turn of events. Cobel was feeling undervalued in season 1 as this was clearly portrayed when the Board refused to acknowledge her contribution in reaching the company’s goal.
