Introduction of Usernames
To offer an additional layer of privacy, Signal is introducing the option to create a unique username separate from the phone number. This username can be used to initiate conversations, providing an alternative method of contact. However, the username will not replace the display name in chats and will remain hidden from other users unless shared directly.
Enhanced Privacy Controls
Users will have the ability to generate a QR code or link that directs others to their username, simplifying the process of connecting on Signal. Additionally, a new setting will allow users to limit who can find them by their phone number. This feature will prevent others from discovering a user's Signal account through phone number searches unless they have the exact unique username.
Greater Autonomy Over Privacy
While the default setting will hide phone numbers from contacts not saved in the user's device, users can adjust this
