Megaport chairman Bevan Slattery has given the green light to start construction on an undersea connection from Sydney to Perth, signing with Alcatel Submarine Networks to build the 5000 kilometre cable.
The cable, which will be installed by Optic Marine Systems, is the first stage of construction of HyperOne, a national fibre backhaul network shaping up to be the businessman’s next major venture. Slattery has already founded NextDC and Superloop, now both ASX-listed companies.

The HyperOne project is being developed by SUBCO, which in October switched on a 9800 kilometre high-speed telecommunications cable between Perth and Oman. That project cost more than $300 million.
SUBCO says the cable from Sydney to Perth, via Melbourne and Adelaide, will be critical to Australia’s digital future. It will have substantially
increased capacity and reduced energy consumption requirements, and is
expected to be 25 times more energy efficient than the legacy terrestrial inter-capital systems that currently exist along the same route. The project is expected to be ready for service in early 2026, with marine surveys to begin before the end of this year and manufacturing to start next year.
