budget session of Parliament starting next week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined on Saturday the significance of proper conduct of members in the House and rued that some political parties defend the erring members as well as those indicted in corruption. He also called upon presiding officers of the Assembly and the parliament to encourage more participation of women and the young members.
In his inaugural address to the All India Presiding Officers’ Conference, Modi said, “The world perceives a parliamentary system by the way the representatives conduct themselves and the way the House functions….
There was a time when if a lawmaker violated any rules and action was taken against him, the senior members would advise him so that he did not repeat this mistake and the dignity of the House was not breached again. But now we see that some political parties stand up in support of such members and start defending their mistakes.
This is not good for any assembly or parliament.”
He further rued that unlike in the past when corrupt lawmakers were shunned, today we are witness to the eulogization of such members. “This is an insult of the executive, the judiciary and also the Constitution,” he said.
The budget session of Parliament, which will kick off on January 31 with the Vote-on-Account to be presented the next day, is expected to be stormy as it comes weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
