«The beauty about India is it is the creator of concepts for emerging models. Developers in Southeast Asia are looking to India. How is India developing? In fact, we run workshops on how Indian renewable power sector has evolved,» Srini Nagarajan, managing director and head of Asia at BII, told ET.
Today, BII has a $2.3 billion portfolio in India and has committed to invest over $1 billion between 2022 and 2026.
«India is not capital-starved. India is at the limelight of attracting global capital,» Nagarajan said, adding that the role of a development financial institution like BII is to crowd in investors by coming in early and «establish the proof of concept, bring it to a commercial stage and then take it to commercial investors».
The quality of capital and where it goes matters as much as quantum, he said. «If you have a bankable opportunity, we can bring in commercial investors, but it's about creating the bankable opportunity where our role is.»
