When Squid Game debuted on Netflix in 2021, it quickly became the platform's most-watched series, captivating audiences with its dark portrayal of economic desperation. The drama features participants risking their lives in deadly versions of childhood games for a massive cash prize.
Yet, the series is not entirely fictional. Director and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that the story was heavily inspired by South Korea’s 2009 Ssangyong Motor factory strikes, which exposed the harsh realities of economic inequality.
