In a video going viral on social media platforms, two people wearing white shirts with Just Stop Oil on can be seen running up to the monoliths with canisters spraying paint. People present there tried to stop those activists by dragging them away.
This is significant because the act of vandalism has taken place just a few days ahead of the summer solstice. Some of the stones, dating back to neolithic period, were seen covered in orange paint. One of the protesters sat on the grass and the other was detained by a member of the public.
According to many studies, carried out by archeologists, Stonehenge was constructed from around 3100 BC to 1600 BC, and the the circle of large sarsen stones was placed between 2600 BC and 2400 BC. It is believed that the surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, were constructed in 3100 BC.
Talking to 'The Express' a 'Just Stop Oil' spokesperson said that the UK government in waiting has committed to enacting Just Stop Oil's original demand of 'no new oil and gas'. But this is not enough, continuing to burn coal, oil and gas will result in the death of millions.
