The company’s plans have gathered steam after Tesla boss Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US last week. According to reports, Musk sought concessions and asked for lower tariffs on imported EVs.
“The company has been keen on Maharashtra because it already has an office in Pune and this would be a natural extension of its operations, considering it has a lot of existing suppliers in the state too,” said one of the people cited. He added that the Maharashtra government has offered sites close to Chakan and Chikhali, both near Pune.
Chakan is among the largest auto and manufacturing hubs in the country and is home to companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Volkswagen and Bajaj Auto.
