Tiger Woods undergoes surgery for ruptured Achilles tendon; likely to miss major tournaments
Tiger Woods underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a ruptured left Achilles tendon. He sustained the injury while training at home.
Post surgery, Woods is almost certain to miss the Masters Tournament for only the fifth time since he began competing in 1995. The injury has cast doubts on whether Woods will be able to appear for any major golf tournaments this year.
How did Tiger Woods injure himself?
Woods shared on social media that he injured himself while training at his home in Jupiter, Florida.
“As I began to ramp up my own training and practice at home, I felt a sharp pain in my left Achilles, which was deemed to be ruptured,” Woods said. “This morning, Dr. Charlton Stucken of Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida, performed a minimally-invasive Achilles tendon repair for a ruptured tendon.”
According to Woods, the doctor did not provide an immediate timetable but confirmed that there were no complications during the surgery. He also mentioned that the procedure went smoothly and that a full recovery is expected.

“I am back home now and plan to focus on my recovery and rehab,” Woods wrote on social media. “Thank you for all the support.”
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, medical experts say a golfer can recover faster from an Achilles injury than athletes in sports like football (quarterbacks) or basketball (shooting guards). This is because golf is less physically demanding in terms of movement and it involves less running, jumping, and explosive actions, which would otherwise put more strain on the Achilles tendon.
