Despite his battle against stomach cancer, Keith radiated positivity. When asked about his health, he shared, «I feel pretty good.» He went on to describe his journey as a bit of a roller coaster, with good days and challenging ones. «You get good days and, you know, you're up and down, up and down. It's always zero to 60 and 60 to zero, but I feel good today,» he revealed.
The night held special significance for Toby Keith as he was honored with the first-ever Country Icon Award during the awards ceremony. This recognition not only celebrated his extraordinary career but also served as a testament to his enduring impact on the world of country music.
Toby Keith also took the stage to deliver a heartfelt performance. He chose to sing «Don't Let the Old Man In,» a song featured in Clint Eastwood's movie «The Mule.» When asked why he picked this particular song, Keith explained that it was deeply connected to his battle with cancer.
«Well, mainly because I've been going through my cancer fight for the last couple of years, and it's really inspiring for a lot of people,» he shared during NBC's pre-show event. «And coming back on TV for the first time and performing live in front of a live audience, I thought it was fitting.»
