winter destinations of Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are reevaluating their travel plans due to an uncommon absence of snowfall. These regions, traditionally bustling with visitors during the winter season, are now facing a decline in tourism activity.
The unexpected weather pattern has left the tourism industry grappling with challenges as cancellations surge, impacting not only travel service providers but also the local economy.
Unusual Winter Weather
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports a striking deficit in rainfall and snowfall in the Western Himalayan Region, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The deficiency in precipitation has been particularly pronounced in the last two months, with December witnessing a 79% rainfall deficit in Jammu and Kashmir, escalating to 100% by January 24.
The remaining states also suffered a 99% rainfall deficit during this period.
Economic Repercussions
As a consequence of the unexpected weather conditions, travel service providers and tour operators are facing uncertainty due to a significant number of booking cancellations. According to an ET report, even Bollywood film shoots, usually conducted in Gulmarg and Sonmarg during February and March, have been put on hold, adding to the industry's woes.
Skiing enthusiasts are also among those who have canceled their plans, further impacting tourism in these regions.
Industry Insights
A board member of a tourism federation revealed that no bookings for film shoots, a common practice in February and March, have been made so far. According to a tour operator in Srinagar, there is nearly 80% less business compared to the previous year.
