The resolution, marking the third anniversary of the conflict, did not put any blame on Russia for the war. It softened the UN's long-held stance on the war as US President Donald Trump seeks to broker peace.
The resolution received 10 votes in favour, including those of permanent members US, Russia and China. The other two permanent members-France and Britain-abstained. Three non-permanent members-Denmark, Greece and Slovenia-also abstained.
The UNSC has five permanent and two non-permanent members. The resolution did not condemn Russian «aggression» or «invasion» nor did it call for a guarantee of Ukraine's territorial integrity.
The UNSC resolution on Ukraine based on US draft text now becomes a decision under Article 25 that all UN member states are required to accept, a source pointed out. How will this impact the Europeans is the big question, the source quipped.
