However, with the escalating outbreak driving egg prices to record highs and millions of birds being euthanised, the federal government may be reconsidering its strategy.
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently signalled a potential shift in its approach by granting a conditional licence for an H5N2 bird flu vaccine. This vaccine is designed to combat variants of the H5N1 virus, which has been spreading among dairy cows and domestic poultry.
The vaccine, developed by Zoetis, a New Jersey-based manufacturer, has met the USDA’s safety standards and shown a «reasonable expectation» of effectiveness, according to a company spokesperson, reported NBC News.
Despite this development, the USDA has not yet approved the vaccine for commercial use or authorised poultry farmers to purchase doses. A USDA spokesperson clarified that the conditional licence is simply part of the research and development phase rather than an immediate step towards a nationwide vaccination strategy.
