USA Boxing has implemented a 'Transgender Policy,' enabling male boxers who undergo transition to participate in the female category starting in 2024.
The governing body, responsible for overseeing amateur and Olympic-style boxing in the United States, has established specific conditions for transgender athletes to compete.
Although boxers under 18 must continue competing based on their birth gender, transgender fighters are allowed to select their preferred category. To qualify, they must meet specified criteria such as declaring their new gender identity, undergoing gender reassignment surgery, and undergoing regular hormone testing.
Transgender athletes, regardless of gender identity, are required to undergo quarterly hormone testing and submit documentation of their hormone levels to US Boxing for a minimum of four years post-surgery.
For those transitioning from male to female, a total testosterone level below 5 nmol/L for 48 months before their initial competition and throughout the eligibility period is necessary.
Conversely, male boxers must demonstrate a total testosterone level above 10 nmol/L for 48 months before their first competition and maintain it at or above that level during their eligibility period.
On Friday, USA Boxing declared a new policy with the aim of ensuring fairness and safety for all boxers. This decision follows the 2021 directive from the International Olympic Committee, empowering each sport's governing body to address athlete disadvantage.
USA Boxing, in the absence of clear eligibility guidelines from Boxing's International Federation for transgender boxers, has independently established this policy, prioritizing the
