Meta platform scams have become a major concern as cybercriminals use sophisticated tactics to exploit victims emotionally and financially.
Facebook romance scams usually start with a simple friend request or message from a stranger. Scammers often use stolen photos and fake identities, pretending to be successful businesspeople, military officers, or professionals working abroad. Over weeks or months, they build trust and affection with the victim. Once emotional bonding is strong, the scammer asks for money, often claiming it is for medical emergencies, travel expenses, or investment opportunities.
According to Meta’s security reports, in 2024 alone, more than 408,000 fraudulent accounts were removed from Facebook. Many of these accounts originated from Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, and Cameroon, where scam networks operate extensively.
