Violence erupts in Manipur as 'Free Movement' begins; bus attacked, 114 weapons recovered, 7 arrested
This follows a directive from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who had instructed authorities to ensure unrestricted movement across the state starting March 8, 2025, while also taking strict action against disruptors.
According to officials, a mob pelted a passenger bus bound for Senapati district with stones in the Gamgiphai area of Kangpokpi. In response, security forces, including tear gas and baton charges, were deployed to disperse the crowd, leaving some demonstrators injured.
Despite this outbreak of violence, the first day of the free movement initiative also saw progress in restoring law and order. Authorities reported the arrest of seven individuals associated with banned militant outfits, signaling ongoing efforts to bring normalcy to the region.
Buses resume operations amid tensions
The resumption of inter-district bus services marked a significant development in the state.
