video showing a tense standoff between two dogs and two lions at a cowshed in Savarkundla, Gujarat, has gone viral. The encounter occurred late Sunday night and was captured by CCTV. The cowshed is located about 70 kilometers from Gir National Park, known for its population of Asiatic lions.
The footage shows the two lions approaching the cowshed gates, only to be met by the two dogs on the other side. Separated by an iron gate, the animals could not harm each other and began slamming against it. Moments later, the lions retreated into nearby bushes just as a man exited the cowshed to investigate the commotion. Shining a torch into the bushes, he then returned to lock the gate.
The lions appeared to have wandered out of a nearby reserve forest area. There has been no official statement regarding the incident.
The encounter took place a day after Gujarat celebrated World Lion Day, an event aimed at raising awareness about the conservation and protection of big cats. The state forest department marked the occasion by sending SMS and email messages to citizens. School students participated in rallies, drawing competitions, and other activities across 11 districts that have a lion population.
According to the 2020 census, Gujarat has 674 Asiatic lions.
