Other fishing boats nearby promptly rescued the fishermen, who had not put on life jackets. Everyone involved, including the whale, were unhurt, according to confirmation from the U.S. Coast Guard. Despite initial concerns, the whale's behavior was actually the consequence of an accident rather than aggression.
The incident happened because the whale was feeding, according to marine researcher Dianna Schulte of the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation. When humpback whales surface to feed on schools of fish, they frequently do so with their mouths open.
