The American Airlines flight, a Bombardier CRJ-700 jet, was arriving from Wichita, Kansas, and preparing to land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. At the same time, the U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter was flying in the same airspace. According to initial reports, air traffic control had issued a warning about the aircraft's proximity, but the helicopter pilot mistakenly reacted to a different plane. This miscalculation led to the fatal collision over the Potomac River.

Investigators have pointed out several key factors that may have contributed to the deadly DC plane crash:
Air Traffic Controller Shortages: Reports suggest that only one controller was handling both the jet and the helicopter due to staff shortages. Managing multiple flights in a busy airspace increased the risk of miscommunication.
Low Altitude Separation: The Reagan National Airport airspace is known for its strict and complex traffic management. Minimal separation between aircraft at lower altitudes may have left little room for error.
