According to Georgewbushlibrary, the role of First Lady has changed significantly throughout US history, transitioning from a primarily domestic and ceremonial position to one with greater public influence and advocacy. The US Constitution doesn't define the First Lady's role, leaving each spouse to shape it.
The term «First Lady» itself has a complex history. Early presidential wives were often called «Lady,» followed by their last names, a practice borrowed from British aristocracy. Dolley Madison, wife of James Madison, solidified the role by hosting White House events even before her husband's presidency. Her ability to navigate social and political circles established her as a prominent figure. Zachary Taylor later eulogized her as the «first lady of our land» in 1848.
The term «First Lady» first appeared in print in Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, referring to Harriet Lane, President James Buchanan's niece, who served as hostess in the absence of a presidential spouse. Other terms like «Presidentress» and «Mrs. President» were also considered. Jackie Kennedy later remarked that «First Lady» sounded like «the name of a prized race horse.»
