From there, Biden will travel to Joint Base Andrews where he will board a “Special Air Mission” aircraft, part of the Air Force One fleet, for his onward journey. This departure tradition began with Gerald Ford in 1977. Before then, outgoing presidents typically left by train.
The Bidens are expected to travel to central California, specifically Santa Ynez in Santa Barbara County, for personal time following the inauguration, according to three administration officials who spoke to NBC News. “the Bidens will travel by presidential aircraft to California to spend time in Santa Ynez in Santa Barbara County,” Senior White House correspondent Kelly O’Donnell reported.
They will be staying at a private residence, the same location they used after the 2024 Democratic National Convention. Plans could change, officials noted, and their permanent residence after leaving the White House remains undetermined. Possible locations include their homes in Rehobeth Beach and Wilmington, Delaware.
