Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot dead outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel on Wednesday morning, according to police reports, as told to the NY Post. The shooting took place at around 6:46 a.m. as Thompson was arriving early for an investor conference hosted by UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare.
The NYPD stated that the shooting was a targeted attack. A masked man, who had reportedly been waiting for Thompson to arrive, fired multiple shots at him from approximately 20 feet away, as reported by NY Post. Thompson was struck in the chest and rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead.
A spokesperson for the New York Hilton Midtown expressed condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by this morning’s events in the area and our thoughts are with all affected by the tragedy. Additional questions should be directed to the New York Police Department.”
The shooter fled the scene immediately after the attack, heading eastbound off Sixth Avenue. Police sources said the suspect, described as a white male wearing a cream-coloured jacket, black face mask, and black-and-white sneakers, was carrying a grey backpack. Witnesses reported seeing the gunman lingering around the vicinity before the shooting and then escaping through the Ziegfeld alleyway before hopping onto a bicycle to flee.
