BBC has suspended its presenter Jon Kay after he was charged with paying a teenager for sexually explicit pictures. London Metropolitan Police has confirmed receiving the complaint but said that it needed more information before deciding on the next course of action. The mother of the teenage boy has said that the television presenter paid his son GBP 35,000 for his nude pictures.
Blaming the presenter for ‘destroying the life of her child’, the woman said that the boy spent the money on buying crack cocaine. She told journalists that she was shocked to see a picture of his son sitting on a sofa in underwear. The mother of the child also said that she instantly recognised the face of the famous presenter as it appeared in a video call exchange with her child.
She added that she raised the issue with the BBC in May after the presenter sent GBP 5,000 in one transaction for his sexually explicit pictures. Ben Thompson hosted Kay’s show ‘BBC Breakfast’. Jon Kay explained his absence from the show and said that he will spend quality time sleeping and hanging around with his friends.
A BBC spokesperson said that the broadcaster treats every complaint seriously and it has a process in place. He also said that the company will contact the person who has lodged the complaint and seek further detail. He added that if any information is received, appropriate actions will be taken in line with the process in place.
The police said that no probe has yet begun as more evidence is needed to launch an investigation. They are doing inquiries to establish if an offense has been committed. The Metropolitan Police also confirmed that a virtual meeting took place between their officers and the BBC representatives.
