markets COST UPS awards WhatsApp Potato and rice to remain costly till December
potato and rice are set to remain high till December, traders and farmers said. Potato sowing in UP, the largest producer, has been delayed by a fortnight due to untimely rains and the new crop will come to the market by December. On the other hand, Cyclone Dana has damaged the standing paddy crop in West Bengal and Odisha. Rice prices have already jumped by up to 15% in the last fortnight after the government removed export curbs and may move up further for varieties like Gobindobhog and Swarna. UP produces around 16 mt of potatoes annually while West Bengal cultivates around 9-10 mt. «This year, untimely rains have delayed potato sowing in most of UP. Generally, sowing starts from September 15. This year, however, it started by the end of September and early October. So, the crop will be delayed and arrive in the market slowly from the end November-early December. Prices, therefore, will remain firm till December,» said Ajay Sharma, a leading potato trader from Agra.

markets Sustainability President Experts reports recommendations MDB reforms short of expectation, say Summers & Singh
Multilateral development banks (MDBs) have embarked on reforms but the pace and ambition fall «well short» of what was recommended and what is required, said Lawrence Summers and NK Singh, who were co-conveners of the G20 Independent Expert Group on MDB Reforms under India's presidency last year. «In our view, the shortsighted approach of waiting until a crisis hits before acting forcefully on MDB reform will turn out to be a costly misjudgment. Time is not on our side,» they said in a latest report card on MDB reforms. Summers, president emeritus at Harvard University, and Singh, a former senior bureaucrat, had recommended a vision for better, bolder, bigger MDBs as a central tool to respond to the issues facing emerging markets and developing economies. The Brazilian G20 presidency this year has followed up by developing a road map of MDB reforms.

markets COST Digital economy Dreams Trade reports Can Vizhinjam port change the future of India's global trade?
A port in Vizhinjam was one of former Kerala CM Oommen Chandy's dreams. Multiple governments attempted to construct a port in the PPP mode but failed. IFC, which was roped in to prepare a report, pointed out that the project would not be viable on a standalone basis without substantial government funding of 85% of the cost. Even though the project was financially unviable, both CPI(M)-led and Congress-led political formations were intent on developing the port. They both knew it had the potential to change the economic landscape of Kerala. Planning Commission's help was sought.

Georgia's president on Monday urged the West to support opposition protests of the official results of a weekend parliamentary election in which the governing party was declared victorious amid voting irregularities and allegations of Russian meddling. President Salome Zourabichvili, who refused to recognize the official results, told AP that the South Caucasus nation has fallen victim to Russian pressure aimed at derailing Georgia's plans to join the European Union. «We've seen that Russian propaganda was directly used,» said Zourabichvili, a fierce critic of Georgian Dream, the governing party. She said the government has been «working hand-in-hand with Russia,» and «probably» received help from Moscow's security services.

UPS Man BURST Boxing Amerika Franz Kafka
Karl Rossmann, a poor boy of sixteen who had been packed off to America by his parents because a servant girl had seduced him and got herself with child by him, stood on the liner slowly entering the harbour of New York, a sudden burst of sunshine seemed to illumine the Statue of Liberty, so that he saw it in a new light, although he had sighted it long before. The arm with the sword rose up as if newly stretched aloft, and round the figure blew the free winds of heaven. 'So high!' he said to himself, and was gradually edged to the very rail by the swelling throng of porters pushing past him, since he was not thinking at all of getting off the ship. A young man with whom he had struck up a slight acquaintance on the voyage called out in passing: 'Not very anxious to go ashore, are you?' 'Oh, I'm quite ready,' said Karl with a laugh, and being both strong and in high spirits he heaved his box on to his shoulder. But as his eye followed his acquaintance… he realised with dismay that he had forgotten his umbrella down below.

markets UPS Provident Manufacturing Gap Schools China must boost consumption to escape debt-deflation loop and better nominal GDP growth
nominal GDP (unadjusted for inflation) growth. At the starting point, nominal GDP growth is at 4%, significantly lower than the 10% rate the country routinely churned out between 2017 and 2019. This is because the GDP deflator (the broadest measure of prices in the economy) has been stuck in negative territory for six consecutive quarters, the worst run since the late-1990s. So, lifting the GDP deflator back toward a 2-3% growth run rate will be key. It is through this lens that one must evaluate the recent slate of policy actions, specifically, whether they will revive nominal GDP growth and lift China out of the debt-deflation loop. These measures are supportive, but not sufficient yet.

markets Digital President War country Israel says it's open to short truce in Gaza but continues with strikes
Benjamin Netanyahu said he's open to a short truce in the country's war with Hamas that would lead to the release of a small number of the around 100 hostages still held by the militant group in Gaza. Netanyahu's remarks followed a meeting between his top negotiator and senior Qatari and US officials in Doha on Monday, aimed at reviving stalled cease-fire talks following Israel's killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar this month. Discussions centered on a plan proposed by Egypt, one of the mediators between the warring sides. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Sunday proposed a two-day suspension of hostilities and the freeing of four hostages in exchange for a number of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
