Shah Rukh Khan wins big in ITAT ruling: Understanding foreign tax credit rule
Shah Rukh Khan secured a major win as the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) ruled in his favor, overturning the reassessment proceedings and order initiated by the tax authorities for the 2011-12 financial year. Against an income of Rs 83.42 crore declared by the actor in his income-tax (I-T) return, the tax officer denied his claims for foreign tax credit (for taxes paid in the UK) and reassessed the income as Rs 84.17 crore. Such reassessment was done beyond four years from the end of the relevant assessment year (2012-13). The ITAT bench held that reassessment of the case by the income-tax department was not legally justified, marking a crucial win for the actor in his prolonged battle over foreign tax credit claims.

Reshaping norms: How organisations can build equitable workplaces for women
A powerful Indian parallel is Kiran Bedi, India’s first female IPS officer. When she joined the service in 1972, policing was seen as a man’s domain. Bedi not only broke that barrier but took on some of the most challenging roles, from controlling riots to reforming the notorious Tihar Jail. These trailblazers, along with pioneers like Captain Prem Mathur, India’s first woman commercial pilot, and Chhavi Rajawat, the first woman sarpanch with an MBA, remind us that breaking bias is not a one-time act. It is a continuous effort to build a future where equity is the norm, not the exception. While awareness around gender equity has grown, the journey is far from complete. Today, as workplaces evolve, the onus is on CEOs and CHROs to go beyond intent and actively craft environments where every woman can thrive. One way to drive lasting change is through structured accountability. Australia’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) is a strong example. By mandating gender pay gap reporting, WGEA has improved transparency and advanced workplace diversity. In 2024, it began publishing employer-specific pay gap data, holding companies directly accountable.

Social Security Increase 2026: Who benefits most from the proposed Republican plan?
Increasing the retirement age reduces total benefits. When full retirement age climbs to 69, for instance, everyone must wait longer for their benefits. Individuals opting for retirement at 62 will face a further reduction in benefits. Raising the full retirement age to 69 is expected to reduce the benefit amount for persons affected approximately by 13%. Who will this social security change impact the most? The most greatly affected would be workers aged 59 and below. Particularly, employees in physically demanding jobs, or lower-income people, which is the group that may struggle to extend their working lives, will be affected disproportionately. Most of these workers heavily rely on Social Security; hard times can be withdrawn should the payment of benefits be delayed. What are the alternative solutions to fix social security? The alternative measures,

Techie with more than 25 years of experience gets shocked when job asks for high school grades. Netizens call out 'micromanagement BS'
high school academic performance, a demand that left him bewildered. His frustration led him to share the experience on the subreddit r/recruitinghell, highlighting what he saw as an outdated and irrelevant hiring practice. Reddit user u/iamdesertpaul posted a screenshot of the application form, which contained two specific questions: «How did you perform in mathematics during high school?» and «How did you perform in your native language during high school?» Both queries required candidates to select an answer from a pre-defined drop-down menu. Beyond merely requesting this information, the application also required applicants to justify their responses. It instructed them to reference standardized evaluations, such as regional or national grading systems, rankings, academic distinctions, or results from competitive college entrance exams like the SAT, ACT, JAMB, International Baccalaureate (IB), or matriculation assessments.

Harvard doctor’s urgent warning: Throw away 3 toxic items from your bathroom ASAP
Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard and Stanford graduate, recently urged his followers to eliminate three surprisingly toxic items from their bathrooms immediately. In a viral video, he highlighted common everyday essentials that, if neglected, could pose serious health risks. He specifically pointed out toothbrushes, razors, and mouthwash as culprits that need urgent attention. Dr. Sethi began by listing the “three worst bathroom items” that should be discarded without delay. Topping the list was the toothbrush. He revealed that a staggering 75% of people continue using their toothbrushes beyond the recommended three-month period. Over time, toothbrushes lose up to 30% of their cleaning efficiency, and worse, the bristles become a breeding ground for bacteria, potentially harming oral health. The second item on his list is dull razors. He stated that dull razor blades cause 10 times more skin irritation. He urges everyone to replace them after just five to seven uses to avoid skin damage and infections. The final common washroom item that he warns everyone of is the anti-microbial mouthwash. He claimed that according to studies, such mouthwash can harm the beneficial bacteria in the mouth that can affect the balance of the gut microbiome.

Appraisers, know what you appraise
Bureaucratic Caste System', former IAS officer and Padma Bhushan recipient M N Buch likened India's bureaucracy to caste hierarchy: IAS as brahmins, IPS kshatriyas, general bureaucracy as vaishyas, and teachers and scientists as shudras. This unwritten 'caste system' was debated in the Supreme Court this week when a challenge to the MP government's 2024 order on performance appraisal reports (PAR) for forest officers came up. The order mandates district-level forest officers — divisional forest officers, conservators and chief conservators — be appraised by district magistrates (DMs) and divisional commissioners (DCs), both IAS officers. MP forest officers contend IAS officials lack technical expertise to judge them.

IRFC shares rise 3% as firm eyes higher margins from non-Railway lending
Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) shares surged 3.14% to an intraday high of Rs 121.45 on the BSE on Thursday as the company aims to improve margins by expanding lending beyond railway projects. The newly designated Navratna PSU is exploring financing metro projects and other infrastructure linked to Indian Railways, officials said. In addition, IRFC is assessing opportunities to refinance loans disbursed by multilateral institutions such as the World Bank. This move is significant given the fluctuations in the cost of dollar-denominated borrowings.

As Trump's tariff actions spread across the world, governments will face greater fiscal imbalance as their trade surplus with the US shrinks and they spend more to insulate domestic demand. Collins Aerospace, an RTX group company, has invested $25 million for a new engineering development and test centre in Bengaluru, its largest facility outside the US. “The 50,000 sq ft lab facility streamlines product development, testing, and certification of components locally … It is also a fresh investment beyond the $200 million we have committed over the last 4-5 years,” said Savyasachi Srinivas, vice president of global engineering & technology centres at Collins Aerospace. The US-based company also has a 30,000-sq-ft electronics lab dedicated to testing. “In all there would be four labs, including in Hyderabad and Bengaluru, which also houses two factories,” Srinivas told ET.

Beyond market crashes: Why investing in uncertainty yields better returns

The idea of making a fortune by investing at the bottom of a crisis is often glorified, fostering the belief that wealth is built by timing market downturns with precision.
