US on track to establish domestic rare earths supply chain for defence, official says
United States is on track to establish a domestic rare earths supply chain to meet its defence needs by 2027, a senior defence official said on Wednesday. The U.S has been driving the build out of a global supply chain for rare earths, metals used in magnets for green energy industries and defence, beyond dominant producer China since COVID upended global supply chains early this decade. «We are on track to meet our goal of a sustainable mine to magnet supply chain capable of supporting U.S. defence requirements by 2027,» Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy Laura Taylor-Kale said at a mining conference in Perth.

Bengaluru airport suspends controversial vehicle entry fee after protests
pick-up lanes at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will no longer come with a fee. Hours after Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), which manages KIA, introduced an entry charge for accessing the arrival pick-up lanes at both Terminals 1 and 2, it has suspended the move, following protests, according to TOI. Initially, there was some resistance from a portion of the driving community, causing BIAL to temporarily halt the fee collection. However, a source within BIAL clarified that taxi aggregators and airport taxi operators, who have their own designated lanes, are exempt from this new fee. Private vehicles were earlier not charged for the first seven minutes of access to the pick-up lanes but had to incur a fee of Rs 150 for the subsequent seven minutes. Commercial vehicles, on the other hand, were to be charged Rs 150 for the first seven minutes and Rs 300 for the next seven minutes. Buses were required to pay Rs 600, and Tempo Travellers Rs 300. If a ticket is lost, a fixed fee of Rs 600 applied.

Speedier Wall Street trades putting global finance on edge
US markets reopen next Tuesday after the long weekend, everything will likely seem normal. It's only after the close and in the following days that any cracks are expected to appear. A spike in the number of failed trades, operational glitches and additional costs are among industry fears as the trading process for American securities accelerates, with the time allowed to complete every transaction halved to a single day. Spurred on by the original meme-stock frenzy, the Securities and Exchange Commission is pushing the shift to reduce the chance of something going wrong between when a trade is executed and when it's settled. But the switch to what's known as T+1 comes with risks of its own.

Why the Centre’s PSE capex story isn’t as rosy as it sounds
The Indian Express last week, union minister for petroleum and natural gas Hardeep Singh Puri said that PSEs had utilized their profits for capex investment, and that as of February, public sector oil and gas companies were implementing projects with a combined investment of ₹5.67 trillion. But this is spread over several years, and the pace of growth would be a better indicator. One measure of PSE capex is ‘net block’, or the sum of a company’s assets on a given date, adjusted for depreciation.
