Warning sign for immigrants? Official English hits different coming from Trump's White House
Trump’s recent declaration of English as the official language of the US may seem relatively benign. Most residents already speak English and most immigrants are eager to learn it. Under most presidents, such a directive might have been largely symbolic. After all, 32 states already have English as their official language. But Trump isn’t most presidents. He has demonized immigrants for more than a decade, making them the scapegoats for nearly every societal ill. In his first term he complained that too many of them came from “[expletive] countries.” At a campaign event last March, he decried those who speak languages “that nobody in this country has ever heard of. It’s a very horrible thing.” In his address to Congress this week, he touted his new executive order and accused legal immigration of resulting in “beautiful towns destroyed.”

A series of unfortunate lit fest events
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Imagine a literary festival not as encounters with favourite authors or listening to fascinating debates but instead as embarrassing onstage debacles, serialised episodes of misadventures that metamorphose in the mind into a very public pillorying. With this season’s calendar of lit fests, in locations as diverse as Jaipur and Thimphu, coming to an end, my bizarre experiences at Sri Lanka’s Galle Literary Festival last month reminded me of my accident-prone run on stage.

Indo-Pacific security: India mustn’t let Diego Garcia fall off its map
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. In any word association test, ‘Diego’ would cue the name of football legend Maradona. But for elderly Indians, it recalls Diego Garcia, a geopolitical bugbear of the Cold War era, when India wanted the US to withdraw its forces from an air-base on a small island by that name in the Indian Ocean.

What is Millie Bobby Brown's real name? Chris Pratt's shocked reaction will surprise you too
Millie Bobby Brown might be one of Hollywood's brightest young stars, but it turns out the name we've all known her by isn't entirely real. The 20-year-old actor, known for her role as Eleven in Stranger Things, recently left fans — and even co-star Chris Pratt — utterly gobsmacked by revealing her actual name during a promotional interview for her upcoming movie The Electric State. While many assumed «Bobby» was simply a quirky middle name, Brown casually dropped the bombshell that the name isn't even part of her birth identity.

Equities suffer in January as nervous investors take £3bn off the table
The January outflows more than reversed the £2.3bn inflows recorded in December 2024 and also bucked the positive flows in November. Active funds in general, and equities, particularly UK equities, were hardest hit. UK equity funds suffer ninth-year of outflows in 2024 Investors were reacting to high levels of uncertainty that began the year, the IA said, adopting a ‘wait and see' approach. Factors including confusion over interest rate cuts, the impact of then-anticipated tariffs from the newly elected President Trump and a market shake up with the blasting onto the scene of De...

'Completely unacceptable': UK strongly condemns Jaishankar security breach in London
It came after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called on the UK to «live up to their diplomatic obligations» after a man from a small group of protesters chanting pro-Khalistan slogans and waving separatist flags attempted to breach the security perimeter as Jaishankar left the Chatham House think tank in London on Wednesday evening. The protester was swiftly taken aside by officers of the Metropolitan Police, which said that no arrests had been made.

More work needed to tackle UK 'inflationary pressure' as BoE members warn of further market upheaval
During a Treasury Committee hearing on Wednesday (5 March), Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey said that, despite the underlying trends toward disinflation that influenced his vote for a rate cut in February, he warned we are «living in a world of greater uncertainty» compared to when the MPC last convened before the committee. He further took notice of UK economic activity, which has flatlined since last Spring in 2024, adding that this is to an extent due to a combination between supply and demand issues. India seeks Rupee’s global reach, but no plan to replace US dollar: EAM S Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, currently on a visit to the United Kingdom, has addressed key global economic issues, including the role of the US dollar, BRICS' position on de-dollarisation, and the internationalisation of the Indian rupee. Speaking at Chatham House in London, he dismissed speculation that India is working to replace the US dollar as the world’s primary reserve currency. «I don't think there's any policy on our part to replace the dollar. As I said, at the end of the day, the dollar as the reserve currency is the source of international economic stability, and right now, what we want in the world is more economic stability, not less,» he said.

India wants stability with China but seeks ‘respect’ for its interests: EAM S Jaishankar
S. Jaishankar said during a discussion at Chatham House, a British policy institute. He acknowledged that the relationship has been shaped by decades of ups and downs, but the real challenge is managing the balance as both nations rise. Reflecting on the last 40 years, Jaishankar noted that peace along the border was seen as essential for better ties. However, the situation changed dramatically in 2020 when Chinese forces clashed with Indian troops in the Galwan Valley, leading to the deaths of around 20 Indian soldiers and multiple Chinese casualties. It was the most serious border confrontation in 45 years.

After military aid freeze, now comes intelligence sharing freeze with Ukraine; Donald Trump is really upping the ante against Zelensky
UK intelligence agencies and military units have been instructed to stop sharing US-generated intelligence, previously labeled as 'Rel UKR' (Releasable to Ukraine). This intelligence has been crucial for Ukraine since the conflict with Russia began three years ago, with the UK and other Western allies like Australia and New Zealand regularly sharing it to support Kyiv's defense efforts, according to a Daily Mail report.
