A fictional phone number lands Abu Dhabi Investment Authority in trouble with India's taxman
non-resident Indians, who don't own an Indian phone connection, one UAE fund decided to use a fake phone number to file for a tax exemption with Income Tax authorities only to be rebuffed. According to chartered accountants, the fake phone number — 9999999999 — is regularly used by non-residents to file their returns. In the case of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), the number was flagged by tax authorities who doubted the veracity of the firm, having used the caller identification app Trucaller to find the 10-digit number marked as a spam caller.

RBI asks OMCs to pay for some oil imports in Rupees next FY
Reserve Bank of India has asked the country’s major state-owned refiners to press Persian Gulf suppliers to accept at least 10% of oil payments in rupees in the next financial year, three executives at the processors said. The move is aimed at promoting the Indian currency in international trade and cutting dependence on dollars, said the executives, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter. The government is worried that India’s booming demand for energy will put downward pressure on the rupee, and also wants to leverage the growth in consumption to its own advantage, they said. The three refiners — Indian Oil Corp., Bharat Petroleum Corp. and Hindustan Petroleum Corp. — have already approached oil exporters on the matter, but the suppliers are pushing back due to currency risk and conversion charges, the executives said. The central bank has asked the Indian refiners to bear part of the currency transaction charges, but they are also resisting the idea on the grounds it will erode margins, they said.

Fractures in global trade deepen as WTO musters only a small win
barriers to commerce, ensure stability through global accords and enforce the rules came under renewed criticism following a chaotic and contentious meeting of its top officials. The 13th ministerial conference in Abu Dhabi last week laid bare an uncomfortable truth: For an organization that needs all 166 member countries to agree, the WTO again struggled to muster even a small win. Those are only getting messier and harder to pull off in an era of two armed conflicts, widening geopolitical gulfs and a realignment of the trading ties that bind the postwar economic order. Meetings in the capital of the United Arab Emirates — positioned both geographically and geo-economically between US-European Union and China-Russia alliances — were dominated by disorder and confusion, according to several participants, who asked not to be named speaking about the private talks. They’re rarely jovial affairs, but hopes were quickly dashed that this year would be a turning point toward unity.

We balanced domestic interests with our trade needs at the WTO
India being on a path to become the world’s third largest economy, with annual growth predicted at above 6% (double the world average) for the next two years, cannot be ignored in multilateral trade discussions. At the same time, our trade negotiators had a tough job balancing the interests of different domestic stakeholders with the changing dynamics of global trade and geopolitics, with India’s aim of playing a key role in resilient global value chains forming an important part of the context.
