Turning grief into purpose: Late Sepoy's wife joins Indian Army as officer, among 133 commissioned at OTA Chennai
Soni Bisht faced an unimaginable loss when her husband, Sepoy Neeraj Singh Bhandari of the 18 Kumaon Regiment, tragically passed away in a January 2023 accident. Instead of succumbing to grief, Soni transformed her sorrow into strength, choosing to honour her late husband's dream by joining the Indian Army as an officer. On Saturday, at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai, she marched proudly in the Passing Out Parade, now a warrior ready to serve the nation, reported TOI. “When I first heard about the Veer Nari entry from officers of the Kumaon Regiment, my father, a retired Subedar from the Brigade of Guards Battalion, encouraged me to take this path,” TOI quoted Soni as saying. “It wasn’t easy, but I overcame every challenge,” she added with a smile, as she was commissioned into the Army Ordnance Corps.

"MS Dhoni came up to me and said....": Ruturaj Gaikwad on how legend approached him for CSK captaincy role
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad opened up on how legendary five-time IPL-winning and World Cup-winning Indian skipper MS Dhoni approached him for captaincy ahead of the previous season and assured him that he will be getting to make his own calls. CSK will be kickstarting their upcoming IPL season against arch-rivals and five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) at Chennai on March 23. Last year, under Gaikwad's captaincy, CSK failed to defend their title, finishing at fifth spot with seven wins and seven losses, with 14 points. They missed out on the playoffs spot on basis of net-run-rate. Speaking exclusively on JioHotstar on CSK's leadership transition, the experts and the skipper himself said: Gaikwad said, «Just a week before the tournament last year, MS Dhoni came up to me and said, 'I am not leading this year--you are.' I was taken aback, asking, 'From the first game? Are you sure?' With just a few days to prepare, it was overwhelming. But he assured me, 'This is your team. You make your own decisions. I would not interfere--except when field placements are a 50-50 call. Even then, it is not a compulsion to follow my advice. That trust meant a lot to me.»

Let a hundred gigs bloom in our cities
Ed Sheeran was stopped by police from an impromptu acoustic one-man performance earlier this month on Bengaluru's Church Street, much confusion ensued. While the police insisted no permission was given, the musician announced he had got the go-ahead. Publicity stunt or cross-connection, it provided a snapshot of the difficulties officialese pose to having musical gigs in our cities. For a country not comfortable with default silence — evident from pervasive honking and smartphones playing loudly on the metro, to blaring loudspeakers that are part of our city soundscape — organising music shows in engaging spaces can be remarkably tedious.
