Global regulators propose tougher scrutiny of voluntary carbon markets
carbon markets (VCMs) in a sector of growing importance to efforts to combat climate change. IOSCO, which groups market watchdogs from Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States, launched a 90-day public consultation on a set of good practices for national regulators to apply. «VCMs have gained significant importance in recent years. But for these markets to succeed, they need integrity — both environmental and financial,» Rodrigo Buenaventura, chair of IOSCO's sustainable finance taskforce, told an event at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai on Sunday. The two weeks of UN talks, which began on Nov.

COP28: Exxon Mobil CEO rebuffs IEA criticism of carbon capture strategy
Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods on Saturday rejected the International Energy Agency's recent claim that using wide-scale carbon capture to fight climate change was an implausible «illusion», saying the same could be said about electric vehicles and solar energy. «There is no solution set out there today that is at the scale to solve the problem,» Woods told Reuters on the sidelines of the COP28 climate summit in Dubai. «So, you could say that about carbon capture today, you could say that about electric vehicles, about wind, about solar. I think that criticism is legitimate for anything that we're trying to do, to start with,» he said. While few commercially viable carbon-capture projects exist due to high costs, EVs now make up about 13% of the global new vehicle market, and solar and wind deployments have been expanding rapidly. Woods' appearance marked the first time a CEO of fossil fuel giant Exxon has attended one of the annual U.N.-sponsored climate summits, and reflected a growing effort among oil and gas companies worldwide to recast themselves as part of the solution to global warming, as opposed to a cause. The future role of carbon capture technology and fossil fuels is a key issue at the conference. The IEA, the West's energy watchdog, issued a report on Nov.

COP28: Calls for more nuclear and less 'destructive' methane
United States led calls at UN climate talks Saturday for efforts to curb methane emissions but also pushed a deeply controversial drive to boost nuclear energy to curb global warming. With smoggy skies in Dubai highlighting the challenges facing the world, other pledges are expected at the COP28 conference, including stepping up the deployment of renewable energy. The use of nuclear power as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels is highly controversial as environmental groups are concerned about safety and the disposal of nuclear waste. But more than 20 nations ranging from the US to Ghana, Japan and several European countries said in a declaration that it plays a «key role» in the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by mid-century. They called for the tripling of nuclear energy capacity by 2050 from 2020 levels. «We are not making the argument to anybody that this is absolutely going to be a sweeping alternative to every other energy source,» US climate envoy John Kerry said at COP28. «But we know because (of) the science and the reality of facts… that you can't get to net zero 2050 without some nuclear,» he said. The other signatories include Britain, France, South Korea, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates.

Israel intensifies its assault on southern Gaza, causing renewed concern about civilian deaths
Israel pounded targets in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday, intensifying a renewed offensive that followed a weeklong truce with Hamas and giving rise to renewed concerns about civilian casualties. At least 200 Palestinians have been killed since the fighting resumed Friday morning, according to the Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, even as the United States urged ally Israel to do everything possible to protect civilians. “This is going to be very important going forward,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday after meetings with Arab foreign ministers in Dubai, wrapping up his third Middle East tour since the war started. “It’s something we’re going to be looking at very closely.”Many of Israel’s attacks Saturday were focused on the Khan Younis area in southern Gaza, where the military said it had struck more than 50 Hamas targets with airstrikes, tank fire and its navy.

Gurgaon police’s Economic Offences Wing to investigate case against Emaar India and JLL India
Gurgaon police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) will investigate the case filed by MGF against Emaar India, the local arm of Dubai's Emaar Properties, and international property consultant JLL India, a senior police officer said. Following the direction of a Gurgaon court, the local police filed a case of undervaluation of land and other charges of committing fraud. “We have registered the case at the direction of the court and have now started the process to transfer the case to EOW. That team will begin the investigation,” said the police officer, who did not wish to be identified. According to a court document, in 2019, Emaar Properties appointed JLL as an independent valuer arbitrarily and forged the reports pertaining to the demerged assets in conspiracy with JLL to decrease the value of MGF’s land and inflate the value of Emaar Properties’ claim to unjustly enrich themselves.

Cow burps, food waste to take spotlight at COP28 agriculture day
Climate advocacy groups are pressuring world governments gathered at this year's United Nation's COP28 climate conference in Dubai to commit to cutting global food sector emissions, as the conference host promises to put agriculture in the spotlight. Global food systems- including farming and land use, livestock production, household food consumption and waste, and energy used in the farm and food retail sectors — account for 31% of human-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). But few governments have ever published numeric targets for lowering those emissions, focusing instead mostly on the use of fossil fuels for power, transport and industry, according to climate advocates. «Business as usual food systems would use nearly the whole carbon budget for a 2-degree Celsius world. We need to implement food systems approaches throughout COP28,» said Joao Campari, global leader of food practice at the World Wildlife Fund. A full day of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP), Dec.

More Indians may spend New Year holidays abroad
Indians might be holidaying overseas this Christmas-New Year season than last year as relatively cheaper fares and packages, better connectivity, and easier entry requirements have made the proposition more compelling. Tour and travel companies such as Thomas Cook, SOTC and EaseMyTrip have seen up to 30% uptick in demand for short-haul international routes compared to last year. Packages for many of these destinations are comparable with those for popular domestic spots, as some countries are actively wooing Indian travellers with visa-free entry and by nudging airlines to offer easy connectivity at affordable rates. Consider this.
