security Discover hospital volunteers Courts Colleges Investigations Kolkata doctor's rape and murder case: Court sends ex-RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, 3 others to 8-day police custody
Sandip Ghosh was remanded in eight-day police custody by Alipore Judges Court on Tuesday. This followed his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges of financial misconduct. Three others were also detained alongside Ghosh, including his security guard and two vendors who supplied materials to the hospital. The arrest is connected to the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the body of a female medic, a victim of rape and murder, was discovered on August 9. The CBI's investigation stems from the Calcutta High Court's August 23 order, transferring the case from a state-formed Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the federal agency. Ghosh was the second person arrested in connection with this case, following the earlier detention of a civic volunteer by the Kolkata Police. The opposition BJP asserted that this development exposed efforts by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government to cover up the former principal's wrongdoings. students Experts reports prevention Schools Equality Courts From classroom to nationwide call: Rethinking 'boys will be boys' after Kolkata incident
sexual violence in Kolkata has sparked a nationwide debate about raising boys with a healthy respect for women to prevent future crimes. Experts emphasised the need for societal change, starting with education and parenting. The commonly heard phrase “boys will be boys” is criticised for perpetuating gender inequality and excusing inappropriate behavior. Reflecting this ingrained mindset, an incident from a Class 7 classroom was mentioned in The Times of India report by Neha Bhayana. During a 15-items activity, a boy expressed disgust upon the mention of “bra” as a clothing item. Srividya Sivakumar, the English teacher, used this moment to highlight that a bra is just a garment and should not be associated with secrecy or shame. Later conversations revealed the students were aware of the Kolkata rape-murder incident involving a young trainee doctor. Given the recent wave of sexual violence, there is growing support for the slogan “sirf beti mat bachao, bete ko sikhao” (don’t just save your daughters, teach your sons). This motto underlines the importance of raising boys correctly to prevent future crimes.
