Ashwin's call: No chat with selectors but decision to bid adieu was on cards after NZ series
Rohit Sharma before his surprise international retirement, refusing to let anyone else write his script after 14 years of service to the game. It is understood that retirement was on his mind after the home series against New Zealand, which India shockingly lost 0-3. He had made it clear to the team management that if he was not guaranteed a place in the playing eleven during the Australia series, he would not even travel Down Under. India played Washington Sundar ahead of Ashwin in Perth before the veteran returned for the pink ball Test, at Rohit's insistence. Ravindra Jadeja played in the Brisbane Test and as Rohit stated after the drawn third Test in Gabba, nobody knew how the squad would shape up for the remaining two games in Melbourne and Sydney.

Shami to play last 2 Tests of Australia tour; to leave after SMAT campaign
Mohammed Shami is set to compete in the last two Tests of the ongoing series against Australia with his playing kit already headed Down Under and the fitness clearance from the NCA's medical team being a «matter of formality». While the Brisbane Test (from December 14) could be touch and go for the Bengal veteran, it is a foregone conclusion that he will be seen in Melbourne on Boxing Day (December 26) in the fourth Test. A source close to the cricketer said that the NCA «fitness certificate» will come very soon. «Shami's India kit has already been dispatched to Australia. He will complete Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 assignment and then leave,» the source told PTI.

Chris Martin had an almost fatal YouTube moment at Cold Play’s final concert in Australia
Chris Martin a “YouTube moment.” Melbourne fans got a nasty shock during the rock-pop band’s final performance at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium when Martin stumbled through a trap door on stage. In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Greg Briggs, Chris Martin was spotted engaging with the crowd when he accidentally stepped backward and fell through the trap door. The audience gasped in surprise, and someone already positioned inside the trap door quickly reached out to soften his fall. The video included the caption, “The moment Chris Martin fell through a trapdoor right in front of me at the #Coldplay concert tonight.”

This NRI couple in Melbourne is looking to move back for family and higher affordability
Poor roads, hazardous air quality, a lack of public infrastructure, and women’s safety issues drove Saurabh Arora and his wife Shubhangi Datta to leave India in 2022. Australia’s relatively lenient permanent residency rules and superior quality of life made it the perfect destination. But after just two years of living in Melbourne, the couple is already thinking about moving back.

Stocks, bonds and major currencies held to tight ranges Friday as traders prepared for US jobs data that will help determine the size of a Federal Reserve rate cut later this month. Shares in Japan fluctuated, as the yen stabilized after a rally this week, while those in Australia were little changed. Futures for US equities slipped after the S&P 500 ended Thursday lower. Pre-opening trading of Hong Kong securities was shut Friday due to Super Typhoon Yagi.

South Korea discusses joining part of AUKUS pact with US, UK and Australia
South Korea has held talks about joining part of the AUKUS defence deal between the U.S., Britain and Australia, Defence Minister Shin Won-sik said on Wednesday, only weeks after the pact said it would consider including Japan. Formed in 2021, AUKUS is a two-stage security pact to counteract China's growing power in the Asia Pacific region. While a first stage to give Australia nuclear submarine technology is limited to the core trio, they have raised the possibility of other countries joining a second stage, or «Pillar 2», that aims to share other military technology.

Another race, another victory for Red Bull's Max Verstappen at Chinese GP
victory in five races this season and his 23rd in the last 27 extending through last season. Only a brake failure last month at the Australian GP in Melbourne probably kept him from sweeping all five. Verstappen trailed for only a few laps following a pit stop. Lando Norris of McLaren was about 14 seconds behind Verstappen in second — the eighth time he has been No. 2 in his career as he still seeks his first victory. Verstappen's Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez was third.

AAP supporters worldwide condemn arrest of Arvind Kejriwal; observe day of fast in solidarity
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) globally have observed a day of protest and fasting in solidarity with party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in an alleged money laundering case. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21, hours after the high court refused to grant him protection from coercive action by the federal anti-money laundering agency. He is currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar jail. AAP volunteers in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia gathered in front of Indian embassies and popular locations on Monday to protest Kejriwal's arrest and call for his immediate release, a media release said. «Arvind Kejriwal is a symbol of hope for millions of Indians who are fighting for a more just and equitable society,» said AAP member Jeswanth Reddy from Los Angeles. «His arrest is an attack on democracy and the right to dissent. We will not be silenced.»

Red Bulls lock the front row: Verstappen leaves Australia GP troubles behind to claim pole in Japan
Verstappen was asked a few days ago if he had concerns going into the Japanese Grand Prix. His rear brakes caught fire just two weeks ago at the Australian GP, forcing him out on the fourth lap. «No, no,» Verstappen replied. True to his word. No worries. The Dutchman claimed the pole for Red Bull in Saturday qualifying, poised to return to his unprecedented dominance in Formula 1 after the blip in Australia. Verstappen clocked 1 minute 28.197 seconds, just 0.066 ahead of Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez. Lando Norris of McLaren and Carlos Sainz of Ferrari — the winner in Australia — will make up the second row.
