New Delhi: Meta Platforms-owned instant messaging service WhatsApp has announced the launch of WhatsApp Channels in India and over 150 countries. These will deliver private updates from organizations, sports teams, artists, and thought leaders that people can follow. WhatsApp Channels are a one-way broadcast tool within the app, the company said in a statement.

India's government has told a court that Elon Musk's X is a «habitual non-compliant platform» and for years has not followed many orders to remove content, undermining the government's role, according to a legal filing reviewed by Reuters. The remarks were contained in an Aug. 24 non-public filing by India's IT ministry to the high court in the southern state of Karnataka, which is set to hear a challenge brought by the social media platform over a government fine in coming days.

New Delhi: The Delhi high court on Wednesday issued notice to the resolution professional of Go First and the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on a plea filed by the airline's aircraft lessor BOC Aviation (Ireland) Ltd. The lessor sought further direction from the court on the inspection report submitted by them in the court. The court also noted that assets are valuable and “can't go like that".

Sugar output in Maharashtra, India's top producing state, is likely to fall 14% in the 2023/24 crop year to its lowest in four years due to lower cane yields following the driest August in more than a century, industry and government officials told Reuters on Wednesday. The reduced output could add to food inflation and discourage New Delhi from allowing sugar exports, supporting global prices which are already near their highest in more than a decade. Higher domestic prices will, however, improve margins for producers such as Balrampur Chini, Dwarikesh Sugar, Shree Renuka Sugars and Dalmia Bharat Sugar, helping them make payments on time to farmers. The western state of Maharashtra, which accounts for more than a third of India's sugar output, could produce 9 million metric tons in the 2023/24 season (which begins on Oct. 1), down from 10.5 million tons in 2022/23, said B.B.

New Delhi: On Tuesday, Apple unveiled its latest generation smartphone, the iPhone 15 lineup, at its Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California. While the smartphones in the lineup were largely in line with Apple’s incremental upgrades offered every year, this year marked the first time that Apple began assembling its latest generation iPhones in time for the first batch of the smartphones to be sold—in India and around the world. NEW DELHI : Retail inflation moderated to 6.83% in August from a 15-month high of 7.44% in July due to easing vegetable prices, offering a measure of relief to the Indian central bank and bond investors. Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation, however, continued to exceed the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) target range of 2-6%. A Mint poll of 18 economists estimated retail inflation to slow to 7% in August.

NEW DELHI : The spectre of an additional tax on diesel vehicles rattled shares of top automakers on Tuesday before an official clarification that there was no such active proposal before the government. Earlier in the day, Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari told an industry gathering that he would consider proposing an additional “pollution tax" on diesel engines if the industry doesn’t transition away from the “hazardous" fuel quickly enough. However, the minister later issued a clarification that said, “It is essential to clarify that there is no such proposal currently under active consideration by the government", and “it is imperative to actively embrace cleaner and greener alternative fuels.

NEW DELHI : The World Trade Organization (WTO) on Tuesday flagged growing fragmentation in international trade with an over-ninefold increase in the number of trade concerns raised in just the last six years. Trade concerns raised at WTO committees are seen as an early indicator of trade disputes.
