Mansukh Mandaviya flagged off the 'Fit India Cycling Drive' at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here on Tuesday. Close to 500 cycling enthusiasts joined the three kilometres ride from the stadium to Raisina Hills and back, the initiative aimed at promoting cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transportation. The event was flagged off by Mandaviya in the presence of Raksha Khadse, the minister of state (Sports), MP Tejasvi Surya, as well as elite athletes, including Paris Paralympics bronze medallist Simran Sharma, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Nitu Ghanghas and Asian Games bronze winner Preeti Pawar. Mandaviya said in a press release, «We have launched this event as 'Fit India Cycling Tuesdays' but for the convenience of cycling enthusiasts, this will now be conducted on Sundays and be called 'Sundays on Cycle'.

NEW DELHI : The Election Commission of India (ECI) will likely retain discretionary powers to defer legislative assembly polls under specific circumstances even after the country transitions to a ‘one nation, one election’ system, per the Constitutional amendment bill tabled in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Currently, the ECI can conduct elections under Article 324 of the Constitution and seek an extension to complete elections through section 153 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

IndiGo flight en route to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was on Saturday forced to make an emergency landing at the Jinnah International Airport in Pakistan's Karachi city following a medical emergency onboard. The aircraft, which departed from New Delhi, was in Pakistani airspace when a male passenger fell seriously ill, according to sources from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). According to Geo News, the passenger was a 55-year-old Indian man.

Rice inventories in India surged to a record high at the start of December, reaching more than five times the government's target and potentially boosting overseas shipments from the world's biggest exporter of the staple food. Rice reserves, including unmilled paddy, in state granaries totalled 44.1 million metric tons on Dec. 1 against a government target of 7.6 million tons, data compiled by the Food Corporation of India showed. Wheat stocks on Dec. 1 stood at 22.3 million tons against a targeted 13.8 million tons.

India's growth story may not have been as sparkling as China's but it's more balanced, thanks to its more judicious investment-consumption mix, Boston Consulting Group's global chief economist Philipp Carlsson-Szlezak said. «When you look at it carefully, China's growth has been very unbalanced-very much focused on capital accumulation, neglecting consumption. And that is now catching up with China,» he told ET in an interview. «To me, from afar at least, it looks like India is on a more balanced path. I presume you can do a lot more capital investment-both public and private. But the fact that consumption is already a significant share of output, to me, it looks much more balanced,» he added. However, additional tariffs on Chinese goods, as pledged by US president-elect Donald Trump, may not necessarily divert massive investments by global corporations away from China, he reckoned.

New Delhi: The Andhra Pradesh government has decided not to extend road tax waivers and cash incentives for buyers of hybrid vehicles, in its new sustainable electric mobility policy document seen by Mint. The policy, effective 11 December, extends benefits only to electric two-, three-, and four-wheelers, goods carriers, and e-buses, diverging from other states like Uttar Pradesh that have incentivized hybrids to promote cleaner mobility. The policy, valid until 2029, is part of Andhra Pradesh’s goal to achieve carbon-neutrality in the transport sector by 2047.
