IT firms are increasingly snapping up Indian startups at a time when the startup ecosystem is amid a funding crunch. Several of the acquired firms are working in the segments of AI, semiconductor, data and analytics and spacetech among others. Most of them are making acquisitions to strengthen their capabilities so that they do not miss out when technology spending, especially in discretionary spends, returns, say analysts. Big IT firms such as Accenture, Infosys and IBM along with many midcaps like Persistent, Cyient, Global Logic and others have recently acquired smaller Indian firms working in cutting-edge technologies. This month, IBM acquired a Bengaluru-headquartered software-as-a-service (SaaS) startup Prescinto for an undisclosed amount. Later in the month Hyderabad IT engineering service provider Cyient acquired 27.3% in US based Indian startup Azimuth AI for $7.25 million. The acquisition will expand Cyient’s capabilities across the semiconductor industry.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, contesting assembly polls from Baramati, has movable assets worth more than Rs 8.22 crore, while his immovable assets were valued at Rs 37.15 crore, according to an affidavit submitted by him before the Election Commission. The movable assets of Ajit Pawar, who heads the ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), include two cars — Toyota Camry, Honda CRV — a tractor, silver articles, FDs, shares and bonds, among others, as per the affidavit submitted by him along with nomination papers from the seat in Pune district for the November 20 polls. Ajit Pawar (65), seeking an eighth term from his home turf, filed his nomination papers as the NCP candidate on Monday. His spouse Sunetra Pawar, a Rajya Sabha member, owns movable assets worth Rs 14.57 crore, while the value of immovable assets in her name stood at Rs 58.39 crore, according to the document.

Swiggy is increasing its investment in its quick-commerce business, Swiggy Instamart to Rs 1,179 crore, up 20% from Rs 982 crore mentioned in the red herring prospectus filed on Tuesday. The Bengaluru-based company said it plans to invest Rs 755.4 crore to expand its dark store network, with an additional Rs 423.3 crore for lease and licensing payments for these stores or warehouses. Swiggy Instamart has around 557 dark stores as of June 30 and plans to now take it to 741 compared to earlier plan of 538 per the draft red herring prospectus in September.

Congress leaders in Pune, after being left out in ticket distributions for the assembly polls has prompted three senior leaders--Aba Bagul, Kamal Vyavhare, and Manish Anand--to file their nominations as independent candidates for key seats in the city. This discontent stems from seat-sharing issues within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The first woman mayor of Pune, Kamal Vyavhare, will contest from Kasba Assembly constituency, while Manish Anand will run from Shivaji Nagar and Aba Bagul from Parvati Assembly seats. Notably, Kasba and Shivaji Nagar seats were allocated to Congress, with Ravindra Dhangekar and Datta Bahirat as the declared candidates, respectively. Parvati Assembly seat was given to NCP's Ashwini Kadam. Aba Bagul, who has been a councillor in Pune Municipal Corporation for 40 years, also being in several standing committees and leader of the opposition in the corporation, is as an independent candidate from the Parvati Assembly constituency of Pune city.

European Investment Bank (EIB) has sanctioned a €300 million (approximately Rs 2,731.02 crore) loan for Bengaluru suburban railway network. This will finance development of a new suburban railway network covering four dedicated rail corridors in Bengaluru. The network will stretch over a total of 149 kilometres (km) and include 58 stations with two depots, an EIB statement said. EIB said it has already supported Bengaluru's transportation sector with a €500 million loan to build the 23 km Bengaluru Metro R6 line and purchase a fleet of about 96 metro cars. The EIB’s support for transport in India includes the financing of metro investment in Agra, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kanpur, Lucknow and Pune, with a total of €3.25 billion committed since 2016. This makes India the largest beneficiary of EIB transport financing outside Europe.
