Why women need more and better jobs and why core problems like lack of safety, mobility need to be addressed
In Pimpri near Pune, when Tata Motors set the ball rolling to set up a pioneering all-woman line at its Harrier and Safari SUV plant, prospective employees —and their parents —had concerns about how they would travel and where they would stay. The management realised that for their mission to succeed, an important piece that had to fall in place was an assurance that the female workers would have a safe commute and accommodation. Says Sitaram Kandi, chief human resources officer, Tata Motors: “Where they would stay became our biggest concern since we didn’t have hostels. We shortlisted hostels near the plant and each one was visited by three different teams at different times of the day so that we could give the girls and their parents confidence.” After a tough initial phase, Tata Motors was able to increase the share of women on the shopfloor from 4% to 12%. “When you think of women’s employment, three big infrastructural barriers end up being the lack of safety, mobility and childcare,” says Pooja Goyal, founding CEO of Udaiti Foundation, which focuses on women’s economic empowerment. “For women to go out of the house to work, the benefit needs to be significantly more than what it is for a man since they are the ones doing the caregiving.”

Pune Porsche crash case: Minor has completed 15-day safe driving programme, says RTO official
minor accused of killing two persons after ramming his Porsche car in an inebriated state into a motorcycle in Pune on May 19 has undergone a 15-day safe driving programme as mandated by a court, a Regional Transport Office (RTO) official said on Sunday. Two IT professionals from Madhya Pradesh were killed in the incident, which took place in Pune's Kalyani Nagar and triggered massive outrage nationwide, partly because of the accused getting bail from the Juvenile Justice Board on lenient terms and due to a police probe finding attempts by his kin and some doctors to cover up the crime. While being released on bail by the JJB, among the conditions placed on him were writing a 300-word essay on road accidents as well as taking help of the RTO to study traffic rules and regulations. «The juvenile accused completed the safe driving programme with the RTO. With respect to the guidelines of the court, the operation was kept discreet as it could have led to issue of privacy of the juvenile,» a top RTO official said.

Court dismisses Burger King's trademark infringement suit against local namesake
district court in Pune has dismissed an application filed by the US fast-food major Burger King Corporation (BKC) to restrain its local namesake from using the trademark ‘Burger King’ In an over 13-year-old case, district Judge Sunil G. Vedpathak, while dismissing the US fast-food major’s petition also dismissed the counterclaim filed by the Pune-based firm. “Admittedly plaintiff (BKC) has registered its trade mark Burger King under class 42 pertaining to restaurant services as of October 6, 2006. So, considering the fact that defendants are prior users of the trademark in question, I am of the opinion that the plaintiff has no cause of action to seek relief of perpetual injunction,” said the court in his 57-page order. “Thus, in the absence of cogent evidence, I find that the plaintiff is not entitled to damages, rendition of accounts and the relief of perpetual injunction,” it further added.

Trademark infringement: Burger King loses legal battle against namesake Pune eatery
Burger King Corporation has lost a 13-year-old legal battle against its namesake eatery in Maharashtra's Pune after a district court dismissed a suit filed by the company alleging trademark infringement. Pune district judge Sunil Vedpathak, in the order on August 16, said the city-based eatery 'Burger King' was operating even before the US burger joint opened shop in India and that the latter failed to prove the local food outlet had infringed its trademark. The court dismissed the 2011 suit filed by the Burger King Corporation, seeking a permanent injunction restraining infringement of trademark, passing off (the trademark as theirs), as well as monetary damages. The suit, filed against Anahita Irani and Shapoor Irani, owners of the Pune-based Burger King food joint, also sought Rs 20 lakh as damages.
