Mumbai police commissioner Sanjay Pandey, who was arrested in 2022 in the NSE co-location case, on Thursday joined the Congress ahead of the assembly polls in Maharashtra. He was inducted into the Congress by its Mumbai unit chief and Lok Sabha MP Varsha Gaikwad at the party office in south Mumbai. Calling himself a 'secular' minded person, the retired IPS officer who briefly served as the acting Maharashtra director general of police, maintained that no other political party except the Congress follows secular ideology.

Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad has threatened to «bury any Congress dog» coming to his programme. On Monday, the Buldhana legislator's announcement of a 'reward' for anyone chopping off Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's tongue had set off a huge political row. Talking to reporters on the same day, Gaikwad is heard saying in a video that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde — who heads the Shiv Sena — will attend a programme about the government's flagship 'Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana' for women in his district. «If any Congress dog tries to enter my programme, I will bury them then and there,» Gaikwad is heard saying. The MLA had earlier announced a Rs 11 lakh reward to anyone who «chops off» Rahul Gandhi's tongue for his remarks on scrapping the reservation system.

Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Tuesday a plea of the Muslim side against the Allahabad High Court order rejecting their petition challenging the maintainability of 18 cases related to the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute in Mathura. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar will hear the plea filed by the Committee of Management Trust, Shahi Masjid Idgah against the August 1 order of the high court. The mosque management committee's plea has been filed through advocate RHA Sikander. On August 1, the high court rejected the plea challenging the maintainability of 18 cases related to the temple-mosque dispute in Mathura, and ruled that the «religious character» of Shahi Idgah needs to be determined.

Sanjay Roy on Friday refused to give his consent for a narco analysis test, leading the court to reject the CBI's request to conduct the procedure in the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case. The CBI had approached the Sealdah court, seeking permission for the test after arresting Roy in connection with the alleged crime. The agency planned to use the narco test to verify Roy’s statements. “The test would help determine if Roy is telling the truth,” the officer stated. During the procedure, sodium pentothal is administered to induce a hypnotic state, neutralising the subject’s imagination, the officer explained, adding that this method often leads to the accused providing accurate information. A hearing on the CBI’s appeal was expected later in the afternoon. The agency had already conducted a polygraph test on Roy inside Presidency Correctional Home, as part of the investigation.

CBI is planning to conduct a narco analysis test on Sanjay Roy who was arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a doctor in R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, an officer said on Friday. The central probe agency has appealed to the city-based Sealdah court seeking permission to conduct the test on Roy, he said. «This is primarily to cross-check whether Roy is telling the truth. The narco analysis test will help us to verify his version,» the officer told PTI. During a narco analysis test, a drug sodium pentothal is injected into the body of the subject which takes him to a hypnotic state, and his imagination is neutralised, the CBI officer explained.

The scheme is benchmarked against BSE 250 Large Midcap TRI and is managed by Sanjay Chawla and Miten Vora. This fund has offered 49.78% returns in the last one year and 22.04% in the last three years. Launched in September 2020, the scheme has offered 29.84% returns since inception.

Haryana polls after it failed to strike an alliance with INDIA bloc member Congress. With the sixth list, the party has now announced 89 candidates for 90-members assembly. school principal and father of a 14-year-old rape survivor have been arrested for allegedly tampering with the birth records of the girl to help the accused secure bail, police said on Sunday. The principal was arrested from Deoria on Thursday while the girl's father was caught from Behror in Rajasthan on Saturday night, Station House Officer (SHO) of Murlipura Police Station Sunil Kumar Jangir said. The girl had lodged an FIR in July alleging that her aunt had sold her to one Sandeep Yadav, a resident of Haryana, for Rs two lakh and that she was subsequently raped. The case was registered under various sections of the IPC and POCSO Act and after investigation, her aunt, Sandeep Yadav and his father Satveer Yadav were arrested and sent to judicial custody.

AU Small Finance Bank has formally made an application to the Reserve Bank of India for voluntary transition to universal bank, the bank announced Tuesday. «We wish to inform (you) that the bank has submitted an application to the Reserve Bank of India to seek approval for voluntary transition from a small finance bank to universal bank on September 03, 2024,» the bank said in a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges. Transition to universal banks would mean that AU would have to follow easier regulatory norms in certain aspects — its capital adequacy requirement would come down to around 11.5% (including capital conservation buffer) from 15%, the priority sector lending norm would be lower at 40% instead of 75%, and the stipulation of having at least 50% of loan portfolio in loans less than Rs 25 lakh would no longer exist.

Hero MotoCorp has elevated its Chief Business Officer for global business, Sanjay Bhan to the role of Executive Vice President with effect from September 1. Haryana, the BJP is looking to bet on several dynasts as its top leadership gathered here on Thursday to finalise the candidates for the upcoming assembly elections. The party may offer October 1 poll tickets to the grandkids of four past chief ministers, including Haryana's three Lals (Bhajan, Bansi, and Devi). The BJP is expected to field Bhajan Lal's grandson, Bhavya Bishnoi, MLA from Adampur, and Bansi Lal's granddaughter, Shruti Choudhry, from Tosham, as well as Aditya Devi Lal, grandson of Devi Lal, from Dabwali. Hockey India named an 18-member Indian men's hockey team for the prestigious Asian Champions Trophy scheduled to begin in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia in China from September 8 to September 17. The tournament will see Asia's top hockey-playing nations India, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Japan and hosts China vie for honours. Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh surrendered before a special court here on Wednesday in connection with a 2001 street-protest case and was granted bail. «Sanjay Singh surrendered in the MP-MLA court here. The court granted him bail on a surety bond of Rs 50,000,» his advocate Madan Singh said. The surety was deposited on the directions of the Allahabad High court which had on August 22 stayed the execution of the sentence awarded by the Sultanpur court. The special court had on January 11 last year sentenced the AAP leader to three months of rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine for obstructing traffic and inciting violence during a protest in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur district.

Supreme Court Tuesday granted bail to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha, an accused in the alleged irregularities linked to the Delhi government's now-scrapped excise policy. «Investigation is complete and chargesheet has been filed. Custody of Kavitha is not necessary,» a division bench headed by Justice BR Gavai said. «The likelihood of trial being concluded in the near future is impossible. As said in various pronouncements of this court, undertrial custody should not turn into a punishment,» it ruled. The bench took exception to the Delhi High Court's observation that an educated, sophisticated woman is not entitled to bail under the beneficiary provision for women under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The high court had made the observation while turning down the bail plea of Kavitha, an ex-MP and daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. The high court in July held that she was not a vulnerable person.

Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra on Wednesday said the income tax department has processed close to 4 crore ITRs for AY 2024-25 in 15 days. Over 7.28 crore income tax returns for Assessment Year 2024-25 were filed till July 31, 2024. About 4.98 crore ITRs (income tax returns) have already been processed by the tax department, and intimations sent to taxpayers. Of this, 3.92 crore ITRs were processed in less than 15 days. «We have made strides in digitisation...About 4 crore returns were processed within 15 days..,» Malhotra said at the 165th Income Tax Day celebration.
