Marathi-speaking people in Belagavi supressed, says Aaditya Thackeray; demands UT status
Marathi-speaking people in Belagavi in Karnataka, demanding that the region be declared a Union Territory. Talking to reporters in Mumbai, Thackeray said while celebrations are underway over the formation of the new government in Maharashtra, the situation was deteriorating in Belagavi in the neighbouring state. As the winter session of the Karnataka assembly begins on Monday, members of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti are opposing it. The outfit organised a congregation in Belagavi, but the Karnataka government allegedly prohibited the gathering and banned leaders from Maharashtra from entering the state. «Marathi-speaking people in Belagavi are being suppressed. Since yesterday, the situation has been deteriorating in the region. Our party workers are being detained. The previous 'unconstitutional' chief minister had promised that they would give extra funds to the Marathi-speaking people living in the disputed territory. What happened to that assurance?» the MLA asked.

Tipu Sultan a "very complex figure in history," says EAM S Jaishankar
Vikram Sampath's book 'Tipu Sultan: The Saga of the Mysore Interregnum' at the Indian Habitat Centre here in Delhi. Jaishankar described Tipu Sultan as a «very complex figure in history,» highlighting both his resistance to British colonial control and the controversial aspects of his rule. Speaking at the event, Jaishankar said, «Tipu Sultan is actually a very, very complex figure in history. On the one hand, he has the reputation as a key figure who resisted the British colonial control over India, and it is a fact that his defeat and death can be considered a turning point when it came to the fate of peninsular India.» However, Jaishankar also noted the «adverse» effects of Tipu Sultan's rule in the Mysore region. «At the same time, he evokes strong adverse sentiments even today in many regions, some in Mysore itself,» he added.

The rapper is presently detained in a New York jail while he awaits trial on human trafficking charges and he will still be able to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, despite not having his family around to join him for a sumptuous meal at his mansion. The entire menu will be made available to the U.S. Sun exclusively on Thursday at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn, where Combs is being held. Cereal, fruit, pastries, and a glass of skim milk are among the breakfast options Combs, 55, will have in the morning.

A Festschrift for Delhi's prime chronicler
Narayani Gupta gathered where else but at the India International Centre for the release of a Festschrift on her. It is a measure of the calibre of the audience that most of them knew the meaning of that Germanic word so beloved of academics and applauded appreciatively as the book was unveiled. For the uninitiated, a Festschrift, literally 'celebration writing', is a collection of essays published in honour of a scholar and presented to them at a landmark event such as retirement or birthday. As the contributors are usually that scholar's peers and friends, such volumes are also called liber amicorum or 'book of friends'. It inevitably has a virtual avatar nowadays too called Webfestschrift, and if published after a scholar's death the compilation is called a Gedenkschrift. The Germanic overtone notwithstanding, Festschrifts are fairly commonplace in academic circles around the world, although initially there were more of these for luminaries in the field of sciences rather than humanities. Now such epistolary toasts are routinely brought out on poets and legal eagles (in India, Keki Daruwala and Nani Palkhivala come to mind), administrators and conservationists, economists and librarians, diplomats and theologians, even journalists.
