Parliament should consider bringing amendment to POCSO Act: SC
Supreme Court on Monday suggested that Parliament should seriously consider bringing an amendment to the POCSO Act for substituting the term "child pornography" with «child sexual exploitative and abuse material» with a view to reflect more accurately the reality of such offences. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice J B Pardiwala said the Centre, in the meantime, may consider to bring about the suggested amendment to the POCSO Act by way of an Ordinance. «We put the courts to notice that the term 'child pornography' shall not be used in any judicial order or judgment, and instead the term 'child sexual exploitative and abuse material' (CSEAM) should be endorsed,» the bench said. The apex court delivered a landmark judgement which held that watching and downloading child pornography are offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 and the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Is a state law hiking levy binding on central govt?
Punjab and the Centre in the Supreme Court, which raises a broader issue: whether state legislation that raises fees for foodgrain procurement under central PDS schemes is binding on the Union government. Punjab raised the levy to 6% of the minimum support price (MSP) for all foodgrains procured from the state, while the Centre agreed to reimburse only 2% of this levy, a standard rate applied across all states, to cover procurement costs. This state levy, reimbursed by Centre to states, is over and above the cost of foodgrains it pays to states. These foodgrains are distributed free or at subsidised prices to weaker and vulnerable sections of society under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Antyodaya and Targeted Public Distribution System.

PM SVANidhi: An idea that lays down a model for marginal vendors to go formal
₹1.5 lakh and ₹1 lakh, respectively. As a broad observation, street vendors in states/UTs where they are in high concentration earn less than those who operate in states/UTs where they show lower density but form a larger share of the workforce. In such a scenario, PM SVANidhi offers crucial support by facilitating financial access, regardless of the market conditions in their regions.

New Zealand seek to exploit Afghanistan's red-ball inexperience in one-off Test
New Zealand will aim to exploit Afghanistan's relative inexperience in red-ball cricket, in the one-off Test starting here from Monday, and gather momentum ahead of their upcoming World Test Championship challenges in the sub continent. New Zealand's first-ever Test against Afghanistan will kick off a challenging couple of months for the Black Caps who play six long-format matches on the bounce in the subcontinent, something they haven't done in 40 years. With their underwhelming subcontinent record in mind (40 losses in 90 matches), New Zealand would want to hit the straps straightaway.

'First-of-its-kind' space travel reality series to get $50 million from Banijay Asia
Banijay Asia plans to invest $50 million (over Rs 400 crore) in a «first-of-its-kind» reality series tentatively titled 'Race to Space', making it India's most expensive television show, sources close to the development said. The investment will cover the licensing fee to the US-based Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA) as well as production and talent costs, they added. Industry watchers said 'Bigg Boss Hindi', hosted by Bollywood star Salman Khan, is currently the country's most expensive non-fiction show, with budgets exceeding Rs 150 crore. «Given the scale and scope of the project, this is not just a documentary series or just a reality series — it is a 'space programme',» Banjay Asia CEO Deepak Dhar said. The new reality format will revolutionise competitive reality television and rekindle interest in space exploration, he added. Expressing optimism about the show's success in India, SERA co-founder Joshua Skurla cited the interest in last year's Chandrayaan-3 moon landing live-stream.
