Due to the severe weather warnings, schools and colleges in Chennai, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur districts will remain closed on Saturday, November 30. This decision comes after the Meteorological Department issued a heavy rainfall warning.
Cyclone Fengal is currently located in the Bay of Bengal and is expected to cross the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast between Karaikal and Mamallapuram, near Puducherry, on Saturday afternoon. Dr. S Balachandran, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, explained, “Mostly coastal districts, the crossing point is between Karaikal to Mahabalipuram near Puducherry. So, all along the coastal districts, the impact will be more. There will be wind and rainfall...”
Wind speeds are expected to reach 70-80 km/h, with gusts of up to 90 km/h, causing heavy rainfall and strong winds across the region.
As the cyclone approaches, the Puducherry Fisheries Department has issued an urgent advisory to fishermen, advising them to move their boats and equipment to higher grounds to avoid damage. They have also warned of rough sea conditions and strong winds, urging fishermen to exercise extreme caution. The Fisheries Department emphasized the need for immediate action to protect both people and equipment from the anticipated storm.
