ER&D companies face headwinds in new twist
The overall growth of ER&D firms is still higher than IT services companies, but the trajectory of both segments have reversed in the recently concluded quarter. “Headcount growth has decelerated cumulatively for Indian pure-play ER&D services companies,” Kotak Institutional Equities said in a post-earnings season note. “These companies have focused on better resource utilization and hiring trainees to optimize cost structures over the past year.”

Viacom18, Star India expect to complete merger by October
Viacom18 and Walt Disney-owned Star India are hopeful of completing their merger by October, when the Competition Commission of India (CCI) is also expected to issue its order, officials familiar with the matter told ET. The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has already put the merger scheme between Star and Viacom18 for final disposal. The merger, which was announced on February 28, is expected to receive the NCLT green signal as creditors and shareholders of both companies have approved it. «The biggest barrier to the merger proposal is the CCI approval. Once the competition watchdog approval comes, the merger deal will be more or less concluded. The expectation internally is that the CCI approval might come in October,» said one of the officials tracking the development.

No re-routing: Ola Electric must stick to its road-map for investors
₹33,500 crore. Large as this may seem, it’s only 40% of what the company was earlier looking at, reportedly, and also a steep drop from its last funding round, which valued it at $5.4 billion. Naturally, too, Ola’s ramp-up to this stage invites closer scrutiny.

Tata Motors’ e-car sales drop 21% in July
Tata Motors’ electric car dispatches to dealers fell 21% in July year-on-year, making it a third consecutive monthly, year-on-year decline for the maker of Nexon.ev and Punch.ev models. PB Balaji, chief financial officer, Tata Motors Group attributed it to discontinuation of the subsidy scheme from April for the fleet segment and overall slowdown in the car market also dented volumes, the company said. Fleet sales account for 20% of its EV sales. Total dispatches at the maker of the Nexon.ev and the Punch.ev fell to 5027 units in July from 6329 units in the same month a year ago. This includes a few hundred units of exports. The company’s June quarter sales also dropped 14% to 16,579 units from the year ago period.

Karnataka withdraws pre-show cause IGST notice to Infosys
Infosys acknowledged the receipt of a notice for alleged evasion of over Rs 32,000 crore ($3.8 billion) in integrated goods and services tax (IGST), the IT major said it has received a communication from Karnataka State authorities, withdrawing the pre-show cause notice. In a late exchange filing on Thursday, the Bengaluru-based IT firm said, “The Company has received a communication from Karnataka State authorities, withdrawing the pre-show cause notice and has directed the Company to submit further response to DGGI central authority on this matter.” The development comes after a hue and cry raised by industry leaders and association post the media reports of a GST demand on Infosys. Earlier in the day, industry body, nasscom said that the recent episode reflects GST enforcement mechanism’s lack of understanding of IT industry operating model. It added that it is not a case of ‘import of service’ by the head office from the branch, as made out to be.

Bangladesh’s shaky political future
When Bangladesh makes international news, it’s usually for tragedies: devastating cyclones, massive industrial accidents, grisly terrorist attacks. Even by those dismal benchmarks, the latest story from Bangladesh stands out—the deaths this month of more than 200 people during a government crackdown on student protests. The violence may signal the beginning of the end for 76-year-old Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, under whose increasingly autocratic rule the country has turned into a de facto one-party state.
