Indian student group begins 'Fair Visa, Fair Chance' campaign in UK
UK's prominent Indian student representative organisations on Thursday began a new "Fair Visa, Fair Chance" campaign in favour of the post-study Graduate Route visa, which has proved hugely popular with students from India since its launch around three years ago. The National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK, which had originally campaigned for the visa that allows international graduates the chance to gain work experience for two years after their degree, fears the ongoing review of the route would reverse the progress made. The independent Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has been commissioned to review the Graduate Route visa by UK Home Secretary James Cleverly to ensure it is «fit for purpose» and is expected to report by next month. Do you meet the immigration criteria? Check here «The ability to work for two years post-graduation helps international students to earn money to help pay for their degrees and enable some to get valuable work experience as well as to continue to build strong links with the UK,» said Lord Karan Bilimoria, Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on International Students and patron of NISAU UK.

Work is my religion; work is my culture, says Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal campaigned for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections at various places in the Margherita Assembly constituency. The senior leader from BJP was accorded warm reception by the people as Sonowal visited North Margherita Rangamancha, Nagapathar Rangamancha, Udaipur Rangamancha, Lidu Railway Theatre among others. Sonowal, “The Congress is synonymous with the Gandhi family; it hasn't transcended beyond that. This party's reputation in India revolves around corruption, nepotism, and fostering division. The people of Assam has endured unrest, rampant corruption and discontent during the Congress era. The injustices inflicted upon the Assamese people by the Congress remain unforgettable. Who will hold accountable those who seek refuge behind the Congress for the security of the people? I entrust everything to the public. I am confident that those who want to piggyback on Congress will fall flat in the court of people’s will, as people will pull them down.”

Helping Modi return for 3rd term your national responsibility: Nadda to Uttarakhand voters
J P Nadda Thursday asked the people of Uttarakhand to again give all the five Lok Sabha seats in the state to the BJP to help Narendra Modi return as prime minister for a third term and make India the third biggest economy in the world. «It is your national responsibility,» Nadda told his first election meeting at Pithoragarh in the state in support of Ajay Tamta, the BJP candidate from the reserved Almora Lok Sabha seat. Prime Minister Modi made the country the fifth biggest economy in the world despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, he said. «If you help him get a third term as PM by ensuring the BJP's victory in all the five seats, he will make India the third biggest economy,» Nadda said.

PM Modi sleeping after taking opium as China entered Indian territory: Mallikarjun Kharge
Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a "sardar of liars" and accusing him of «sleeping» after taking opium while China «entered» Indian territory. Addressing an election rally in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh, he said Modi does not think for the country but is busy only abusing the Gandhi family whose members sacrificed their lives for the nation. «Modi says 'I have a 56-inch chest, I will not be scared'. If you are not afraid then why have you left a large part of our land for China. They are coming inside and you are sleeping. Have you taken sleeping pills? Have they taken opium from the fields of Rajasthan… and fed you?» he said in Hindi. «Modi kehate hain 56 inch ki chhati hai, main nahi darunga. Agar nahi darte to fir China ko hamare bahut saa bhag kyo chhode? Wo andar ghus kar aa rahe, aap kya neend kar rahe ho? Kya neend ki goli khaaye ho? Kya Rajasthan ke kheton me se afeem le jaake'… ya wo khilaye hai kya?» Kharge alleged the prime minister is not concerned about the country but he is busy abusing the Gandhi family. «He wants to take the people of the country with him by torturing them. He always keeps lying,» Kharge said. «Modi is 'sardar of liars'.»

Centre to increase wheat procurement from Bihar, Rajasthan UP drastically
wheat procurement from Bihar, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, taking it up to 50 LMT in Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2024-25 from last season's 6.5 LMT, said a senior official in the food ministry adding that this will help the government in meeting its procurement target of 310 LMT and restoring the allocation of wheat in various food security programmes. The government which currently sells 75,000 tonnes of atta and rice under its own private label — Bharat Brand — during a weak, is planning to double this in the next fortnight. It has sold 7.06 LMT of wheat and 3.1 LMT of rice under Bharat brand until now. These states (Bihar, UP, Rajasthan) have the potential for production but procurement has been less than expected, the official said, adding that several rounds of meetings have been conducted with food secretaries of these states to help with the target. The government will also make payments to the farmers within 48 hours of procurement.

UK's higher salary thresholds for overseas skilled work visas kick in
salary thresholds for overseas workers, including Indians, applying for the UK's Skilled Worker visas kicked in on Thursday, as part of tough new measures announced earlier to cut Britain's overall migration figures. For those applying under the Skilled Worker visa route, the salary threshold for an application will rise from GBP 26,200 to GBP 38,700 — an increase of 48 per cent. The UK Home Office said it forms part of a «robust and fair package of measures», which will mean 300,000 people who arrived in the UK last year would now not be able to and also prevent undercutting of domestic workers by cheap overseas labour. «It's time to turn off the taps and end the flow of cheap workers from abroad. Mass migration is unsustainable, and it's simply not fair. It undercuts the wages of hard-working people who are just trying to make ends meet,» said UK Home Secretary James Cleverly.
